Embarking on the Samaria Gorge hike, you’ll experience a full-day adventure that begins early in the morning and culminates in the picturesque Agia Roumeli. Starting from Xyloskalo, you’ll descend 600 wooden steps into the heart of this majestic gorge, encountering breathtaking scenic views that will inspire you to keep going. The hike is undeniably a physical challenge, stretching over 16.5 kilometers, but it’s this very difficulty that makes reaching the end so rewarding.

Detailed Itinerary

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the day’s itinerary to help you prepare for this incredible adventure. Your journey begins around 5:20 AM with a pick-up from your hotel. By 7:30 AM, you’ll arrive at Omalos Plateau, taking in the first of many scenic views. At 8:00 AM, the hike officially starts at Xyloskalo.

As you descend the 600 wooden steps into the gorge, you’ll face a rewarding physical challenge. The path is 16.5 kilometers long and will have you encountering diverse wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for kri-kri goats and other native species.

Midway through, you’ll come across the ancient church of St. Nicolas, one of the historical landmarks nestled within the gorge. After passing through the narrow ‘Iron Gates,’ you’ll finally reach Agia Roumeli around 2:00 PM. Here, you have free time to enjoy a well-deserved meal, take a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea, and relax.

At 4:30 PM, meet your guide to collect ferry tickets for Sougia. Departing at around 5:00 PM, you’ll arrive in Sougia by 6:30 PM. Finally, you’ll return to Chania between 8:00 and 8:30 PM, completing a day filled with awe-inspiring experiences.

Notes:

  1. The trip is not recommended for any person with a history of knee problems, high blood pressure, cardiac and pulmonary problems, for pregnant women and for anybody who suffers from vertigo/fear of heights!
  2. Due to the difficulty of the hiking tour, bookings with young children until 14 years old will not be accepted. If you are staying in Chania region and you would like to visit Samaria with your children we advise you to check our Samaria, The Lazy Way tour!
  3. For bookings 2 days before departure please contact us in order to check availability!
  4. Please provide fullname, telephone number (country code included), e-mail and accommodation details (hotel name & address) upon booking.
  5. Please arrive on time to the given pick-up point. Unfortunately, there is no option to wait for latecomers. In case of delay, missed pick-up, missed departure time, no refunds.
  6. The travel agency reserves the right to alter or cancel any tour due to adverse weather conditions or insufficient passengers number or force majeure 12 hours prior to departure time with a notification to the traveler.
