Zaros is famous for its spring water, bottled and distributed throughout Greece. The village’s pristine environment is perfect for nature walks, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the lush landscapes and fresh air. One of the highlights of Zaros is the emerald lake, Lake Votomos, which serves as a serene backdrop for leisurely strolls and moments of reflection.
Zaros also has some fine Byzantine monasteries, and delicious farm-raised trout served up in tavernas around town and on emerald-green Lake Votomos which will be visited.
Exploring Vatos Village
Our journey continues to the traditional Cretan village of Vatos, a small, hidden gem enveloped in lush greenery. This idyllic village offers a unique opportunity to experience the richness of Cretan culture and traditions. As we navigate its charming alleys, we encounter remnants of the past that provide deep insights into local traditions and way of life.
Visitors are often captivated by the old school and its historic fountain, both of which serve as windows into the village’s storied past. The local museum, showcasing an array of farming tools and utensils, further immerses us in the traditional customs that have shaped the community for generations.
Vatos is renowned for its cultural experiences, particularly the age-old practice of Raki production. Observing the meticulous process at the village cauldron, one gains a profound appreciation for this cherished, traditional craft.
Discovering Spili’s Venetian Charm
Spili beckons with its enchanting blend of Venetian architecture and serene village ambiance, inviting visitors to explore its historic and picturesque streets. Nestled in the heart of Crete, Spili is renowned for its long line of 25 stone lion heads, a striking example of Venetian craftsmanship, from which cool, crystal-clear water continuously flows. This remarkable feature is not only a testament to the town’s rich cultural heritage but also a refreshing oasis for travelers.
As you wander through Spili, the village’s dedication to traditional crafts becomes evident. Local artisans meticulously craft intricate textiles and ceramics, preserving skills passed down through generations. These beautiful creations make perfect souvenirs and offer a tangible connection to Spili’s past.

Lampini’s Historical Treasures
Renowned for its rich historical legacy, Lampini boasts the church and museum of Panagia with frescoes dating back to the 12th and 14th centuries. Returning to Heraklion

Starting in Zaros, the journey traverses historical and architectural landmarks in Vatos and Spili, and Lampini’s historic church and museum.
Late in the afternoon at 18:30, we return to Heraklion at the terminal in front of Astoria Capsis Hotel.
